Sharper

Sharper (2023) is a slick and stylish psychological thriller directed by Benjamin Caron, set against the backdrop of New York City’s elite. The film dives into a world of lies, wealth, and manipulation, where every character is playing a role, and no one is exactly who they seem to be.
Told through a nonlinear narrative structure, Sharper gradually reveals the layers of a complex con that ties all the characters together. The film begins with Tom (Justice Smith), a quiet and kind-hearted bookstore owner who falls for Sandra (Briana Middleton), a mysterious woman with a troubled past. Their blossoming romance takes a dark turn when Sandra disappears after scamming Tom out of a large sum of money.

As the story unfolds, we’re introduced to Madeline (Julianne Moore), a refined woman entangled with a wealthy businessman, Richard Hobbes (John Lithgow). Her connection to Max (Sebastian Stan), a smooth-talking con artist with a cold edge, becomes clearer as each chapter reveals a different character’s perspective and how they all intertwine in a multi-layered scheme targeting the ultra-rich.

Each twist in Sharper redefines what the audience thinks they know, keeping viewers on edge as identities shift and alliances break. The film explores themes of greed, betrayal, and the masks people wear—especially in the pursuit of power and wealth. Its narrative cleverly plays with audience expectations, slowly building tension and unveiling motivations with precision.

Visually, the film is sleek and moody, echoing the elegance of classic noir thrillers but with a modern sensibility. Sharp performances from the cast, particularly Moore and Stan, elevate the material, blending charm with danger in a tale where manipulation is currency.
In the end, Sharper isn’t just about a con; it’s about who is sharper—who sees through the lies and who ultimately controls the game. With its twists, refined style, and thematic depth, Sharper delivers a compelling watch for fans of slow-burn thrillers and character-driven deception stories.
