The Public Woman

The Public Woman (La Femme Publique), directed by Andrzej Żuławski, is a provocative French psychological drama that explores obsession, identity, and the blurry line between life and performance. Inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Demons, the film follows the story of Ethel (Valérie Kaprisky), a young and aspiring actress living in Paris who is cast in a film adaptation of the novel. As she prepares for her role, her life becomes increasingly entangled with the dark, volatile world of her director and co-stars.

Ethel is portrayed as both sensual and vulnerable, a woman trying to find control in a world where she’s constantly objectified and manipulated. Her life begins to mirror the chaotic and dangerous themes of the film she’s working on, especially after she becomes involved with Milan (Francis Huster), a mysterious émigré with radical political ideas and a haunted past. The boundaries between reality and fiction begin to collapse, leading Ethel down a spiral of eroticism, paranoia, and political intrigue.

Żuławski’s direction is intense, stylized, and emotionally raw. The film is known for its sexually explicit scenes and its surreal, often disorienting atmosphere. Through Ethel’s descent into psychological turmoil, The Public Woman critiques the exploitative nature of art and the personal costs of self-exposure. The cinematography, filled with dramatic movements and lighting, adds to the film’s dreamlike quality, while Kaprisky’s fearless performance anchors the emotional core.
Ultimately, The Public Woman is a disturbing yet fascinating exploration of freedom, performance, and identity in a morally ambiguous world. It reflects on the political tensions of the era, artistic obsession, and the vulnerability of women navigating a male-dominated space — making it a haunting and unforgettable cinematic experience.
