Betty Blue (original French title: 37°2 le matin) is a 1986 French romantic drama directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix. Based on the novel by Philippe Djian, the film tells the intense and tragic love story of Zorg, a struggling writer and handyman, and Betty, a passionate and unpredictable young woman.
The story begins in a quiet beach town in southern France, where Zorg lives a simple life working odd jobs and writing in his spare time. His world is turned upside down when he meets Betty, a fiery and impulsive woman who quickly becomes his lover. At first, their relationship is filled with wild passion and spontaneous joy. Betty, discovering Zorg’s hidden manuscript, is convinced of his talent and becomes determined to help him become a published author.
As they travel to Paris in search of a better life and literary success, Betty’s behavior grows increasingly erratic. What begins as eccentricity slowly turns into mental instability. Despite Zorg’s devotion and patience, Betty’s psychological condition worsens, leading to tragic consequences.
The film is known for its vibrant cinematography, emotional intensity, and raw performances—particularly from Béatrice Dalle in her debut role as Betty. Her portrayal of a woman consumed by love and madness is both mesmerizing and heartbreaking. Jean-Hugues Anglade delivers a moving performance as Zorg, capturing the pain of loving someone he cannot save.
Betty Blue explores themes of love, creativity, freedom, and the fine line between passion and insanity. It is both a sensual and sorrowful film, remembered for its powerful visuals and haunting portrayal of a doomed romance. The film received critical acclaim and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It remains a cult classic of French cinema, celebrated for its emotional depth and bold storytelling
