10 Things I Hate About You

10 Things I Hate About You is a witty, modern teen romantic comedy directed by Gil Junger, based on William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Set in a late-90s high school in Seattle, the film cleverly updates the classic play with humor, charm, and a memorable cast.
The story centers on two sisters: the popular and sweet Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik), and her older, sharp-tongued, fiercely independent sister, Kat (Julia Stiles). Their strict father has a rule—Bianca can’t date unless Kat does. This becomes a problem since Kat is notorious for scaring off every guy.

Enter Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a new student who falls for Bianca. Desperate to date her, he enlists the help of bad boy Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to date Kat. Patrick is paid off to woo her, but as he spends more time with her, he starts falling genuinely in love. Meanwhile, Kat, guarded and skeptical of love, slowly lets her walls down.

The film is filled with clever dialogue, standout performances, and iconic moments—most notably Kat’s emotional poem that reveals her vulnerability and the real reason behind the title. Heath Ledger’s charismatic performance, especially his musical serenade on the bleachers, made him an instant teen icon.
Beyond the romance, the film also touches on themes of identity, authenticity, and not conforming to expectations. Kat’s feminist voice and independent spirit challenged typical female roles in teen films of the time.
